Pipettes & Popsicles

Science, Closely Read

Hi, I'm Anushka — a researcher and writer who has never quite believed that those are different things. An experiment is just a question you're willing to sit with long enough to find out what it's really asking. I do that in labs. I do it on the page too. Because science only matters if it reaches beyond the lab — to policymakers, journalists, and concerned citizens who need to understand it too. One experiment at a time.

Curious about the name of this blog? Start with this namesake post Pipettes & Popsicles! Want to know why I'm obsessesed with global health research, international collaboration and policy ? Start with A Year Ago.

Research: Multidrug-resistant TB kills over 1M people a year, hitting hardest where treatment access is lowest. I characterized genes 2508, 61-69, and 61-71 in the ESX-1 cluster to identify their role in contact-dependent conjugation: a step toward non-antibiotic targets for TB.

Research: Many freshwater fish in the Congo Basin remain genetically undocumented. I DNA barcoded six killifish species to trace paleoclimatic and human impacts on their genomes — uncovering new diversity, and one new species.

Diseases without Borders

Independent Research

Research: A personal case of Salmonella Typhi — contracted in India, misdiagnosed for weeks in the US — raised a question: why is identifying internationally acquired infections so slow? I built a proof-of-concept machine learning model to help speed it up.
